Eternal God, give us insight to discern your will for us, to give up what harms us, and to seek the perfection we are promised in Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

May we hear you, Lord:

and want to obey.

In your prayers this week could you pray for our five overseas partner Dioceses especially today the Diocese of El Camino Real and for Churches Together, St. Giles, Uley.

Post Communion

Merciful Lord, grant your people grace to withstand the temptations of the world, the flesh and the devil, and with pure hearts and minds to follow you, the only God; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

First Reading – 1 Corinthians 1 v18-25

18For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.  19For it is written, “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”  20Where is the one who is wise?  Where is the scribe?  Where is the debater of this age?  Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?  21For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through the foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe.  22For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, 23but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, 24but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.  25For God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.

I heard the voice of Jesus Say

I heard the voice of Jesus say,

‘Come unto me and rest;

lay down, thou weary one, lay down

thy head upon my breast.’

I came to Jesus as I was,

so weary, worn and sad;

I found in him a resting-place,

and he has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,

‘Behold, I freely give

the living water, thirsty one;

stoop down and drink and live.’

I came to Jesus, and I drank

of that life-giving stream;

my thirst was quenched, my soul revived,

and now I live in him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say,

‘I am this dark world’s light;

look unto me, thy morn shall rise,

and all thy day be bright.’

I looked to Jesus, and I found

in him my star, my sun;

and in that light of life I’ll walk

till trav’lling days are done.

Gospel Reading – John 2 v13-22

13The Passover of the Jews was near, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.  14In the temple he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables.  15Making a whip of cords, he drove all of them out of the temple, both the sheep and the cattle.  He also poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables.  16He told those who were selling the doves, “Take these things out of here!  Stop making my Father’s house a marketplace!”

17His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”  18The Jews then said to him, “What sign can you show us for doing this?”  19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”  20The Jews then said, “This temple has been under construction for forty-six years, and will you raise it up in three days?” 21But he was speaking of the temple of his body.  22After he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this; and they believed the scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Spirit of the living God

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Melt me, mould me, fill me, use me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on us.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on us.

Melt us, mould us, fill us, use us.

Spirit of the living God, fall afresh on us.

O Breath of Life

O Breath of Life, come sweeping through us,

revive your Church with life and pow’r;

O Breath of Life, come cleanse, renew us,

and fit your Church to meet this hour.

O Breath of Love, come breathe within us,

renewing thought and will and heart;

come, love of Christ, afresh to win us,

revive your Church in ev’ry part!

O Wind of God, come bend us, break us,

till humbly we confess our need;

then, in your tenderness remake us,

revive, restore – for this we plead.

Revive us, Lord; is zeal abating

while harvest fields are vast and white?

Revive us, Lord the world is waiting –

equip thy Church to spread the light.

Sadly no delicious tea & cake supplied but an exciting afternoon featuring four musicians, our very own Rachel Mapp, a harpist from London, a young clarinetist from Thornbury and an even  younger  singer from Kent.
