fill us to overflowing.

In your prayers this week could you pray for our five overseas partner Dioceses especially today the Diocese of Dornakal and for Churches Together, The Quarry Chapel U.R.C.

Post Communion

Lord of all time and eternity, you opened the heavens and revealed yourself as Father in the baptism of Jesus your beloved Son: by the power of your Spirit complete the heavenly work of our rebirth through the waters of the new creation; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

First Reading – Acts 19 v1-7

19While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the interior regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples.  2He said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?”  They replied, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”  3Then he said, “Into what then were you baptised?”  They answered, “Into John’s baptism.”  4Paul said, “John baptised with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.”  5On hearing this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus.  6When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied— 7altogether there were about twelve of them.

Gospel Reading – Mark 1 v4-11

4John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.  5And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptised by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.  6Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey.  7He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals.  8I have baptised you with water; but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.”  9In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptised by John in the Jordan.  10And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him.  11And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

Father hear the prayer we offer

Father, hear the prayer we offer:

not for east that prayer shall be,

but for strength that we may ever

live our lives courageously.

Not for ever in green pastures

do we ask our way to be;

but the steep and rugged pathway

may we tread rejoicingly.

Not for ever by still waters

would we idly rest and stay;

but would smite the living fountains

from the rocks along our way.

Be our strength in hours of weakness,

in our wand’rings be our guide;

through endeavour, failure, danger,

Father, be thou at our side.

Seek ye first the Kingdom of God

Seek ye first the kingdom of God,

and his righteousness,

and all these things shall be added

unto you:

allelu, alleluia.

Alleluia, alleluia,

alleluia, allelu, alleluia.

You shall not live by bread alone,

but by ev’ry word

that proceeds from the mouth of God;

allelu, alleluia.

Ask and it shall be given unto you,

seek and ye shall find;

knock, and it shall be opened unto you;

allelu, alleluia.

Rock of Ages cleft for me

Rock of ages, cleft for me,

let me hide myself in thee;

let the water and the blood,

from thy riven side which flowed,

be of sin the double cure:

cleanse me from its guilt and pow’r.

Not the labours of my hands

can fulfil thy law’s demands;

could my zeal no respite know,

could my tears for ever flow,

all for sin could not atone:

thou must save, and thou alone.

Nothing in my hands I bring,

simply to thy cross I cling;

naked, come to thee for dress,

helpless, look to thee for grace;

tainted, to the fountain fly;

wash me, Saviour, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,

when mine eyelids close in death,

when I soar through tracts unknown,

see thee on thy judgement throne;

Rock of ages, cleft for me,

let me hide myself in thee.

10th January – Magazine notes to Barbara or Gill – thank you

7th February - Christingle Service
Children’s Society collection boxes and envelopes are at the back of the church, by the door. Do please take one, so that if you wish to make a donation to the Society, you can bring it to the Christingle Service, which this year is on Sunday 7th February (this will be confirmed nearer the time).  Thank you (LC)

Friends at Christmas

Thank you for generous donations for gifts for Friends at Christmas. Because other Churches had been able to respond earlier to the appeal our donation was not needed for that purpose. It is proposed that we give the money to the Foodbank to help with the ongoing expenses.

Magazine Dedication

The Magazine Editorial Committee would like to offer the chance to dedicate the colour front page of the Church Magazine to a loved-one.  The cost of this is £20 and please contact Gill for a choice of covers.

Lower Cam church will be shut for services for the next 4 weeks when it will be reviewed and Revd. Peter will be doing a zoom communion service on Sunday mornings.   Church will be open Monday to Friday 9.00am to 5.00pm for private prayer (LC)
